HISTORY: 

For your history lesson today we are going to try out The Oak National Academy web site again. Once you have found the web site go to- Subjects - Key Stage 2- History -Ancient Greece -Lesson 2 - Why do we know so much about Ancient Greece ?

The lesson asks you to pause and answer questions, write down your answers and post them on Seesaw for me to see later. 

 

 

ENGLISH: Today we are going to look more closely at the witches from Macbeth and see what they might add to their cauldron to cast such evil spells. 

The Witches' spell

In Shakespeare’s original text,the witches cast this spell when Macbeth visits them for a second time.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

 

Writing a witch’s spell
• For this lesson, you will create your own magic spells using the same opening and closing
couplets (in bold and italicised) as the original Shakespeare text, but with your own disgusting
ingredients in between! You could mind-map some of the ingredients you wish to include,
making them as repulsive as possible!
• It is worth noting that there are seven syllables for each of the ‘ingredients’ lines which you
could recite and clap to make sure they follow the same rhythm. Can you make your own ‘ingredients’ lines seven beats long?

 

When you have written your spell, illustrate your work to show the cauldron and some of the ingredients that you have chosen.

Tuesday 15th September

ENGLISH:

Today we are going to describe the heath from the first episode of Macbeth. 

Watch the the clip again and write down some descriptive words and phrases to describe the scene. Focus on the description and don't worry too much about re-telling the story. I have given you an example below to help you. 

 

Fog and mist engulfed the barren landscape, leaving it, to the naked eye, as mysterious and infinite as an echo. The deadened heath was as dull as stone and as treacherous as thunder. There was a complete silence, disturbed only by the whistling of the wind or the shuffling of wilted leaves littered upon the dry earth.

On closer inspection, one would come to the horrifying realisation that there was more to this apparently desolate and bare scene than met the eye. In between the split dead tress and limp lifeless flowers lay items of more distress. Pieces of black fabric, torn away after having been caught on thorns, flew with the wind as did the leaves on the ground. Skulls, charms and other such items which seem to encompass all the ideals of a gruesome horror story with a bloody end, lay discarded thoughtlessly around the unsightly surroundings. Animal feathers and skeletons hung from the trees on scarlet ribbons tied elegantly, almost ironically so, with a beautifully executed bow. The perpetrators, and the only human life forms (if you could address such beings as humans) to even attempt staying on the heath for more than was absolutely necessary could now be heard slowly making their way back across the land.

Go to the link above and listen to the first part when Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches on the heath. 

This is how Banquo describes the witches for the first time. Even though the language is quite confusing there are words there that you will recognise.

Live you? Or are you aught That man may question?
You seem to understand me
By each at once her choppy finger laying

I can use the description of The Three Witches to draw my own interpretation. 

I can annotate my drawings with vocabulary that describe the witches. 


At the top of a new page copy: 
‘All Hail, Macbeth and Banquo!’
Now draw a picture of the three witches. Try to make each witch different to the next. One might be old and withered, the next might be young, one might be a male witch, etc.

If you Google The Three Witches from Macbeth you will find lots of pictures to inspire you. 

Once you have drawn the witches annotate them with words and phrases that describe them. 

You might use vocabulary from the speech at the beginning of the lesson or some of your own.

Remember to include an introduction and then sub- headings.

Friday 11th September 

Well done 6SL- you have posted so much work on Seesaw. The pots that you are designing look fabulous and it is clear to see that you have researched different myths. 

Also, well done to everyone who managed to complete their reading comprehension. I will post the answers at the end of the day, just in case anyone else is still working on theirs. Remember I am keeping a record of all the points that you are achieving by submitting work - so keep up the hard work.

Dear Mum, 

I hope you and Rosie are keeping well. I’m not sure how long this letter will take to reach you, as I’m posting it from one of the islands we’ve stopped off at to shelter from yet another storm. The weather has been particularly bad lately. We just seem to be hitting one storm after another. I think I’m finally getting my sea legs though. I haven’t thrown up for at least a week now! That’s definitely progress. Seriously though, the weather needs to settle soon as we must catch a decent haul of fish in order to make this trip worthwhile. We can’t come home until we do.
Captain Abrahams is doing a great job of looking after me. He keeps me close by and he’s really patient when I make mistakes. The lads are a good bunch too. They pull my leg a little but I know they don’t mean any harm by it. They understand how hard it is to be away from home for so long. They seem used to it now, unlike me. I miss you guys so much. I miss my warm soft bed and I most definitely miss dry land!

I’m not complaining though, as I know I’ve made the right decision. Grandad was a fisherman and dad was a fisherman, so it must be in the blood, right? I wonder how long it took them to get used to it? I think dad would have been proud of me. I somehow feel closer to him when I’m out at sea. Silly I know! Anyway, I must go now as we’ve finished collecting provisions and we are about to set sail again.

I have set you some Mathletics today, one of the activities is an arithmetic test, don't worry if you find some of the questions difficult, just have a go at the ones you can do. 

Don't forget to have a go at designing your Greek pots as well- hopefully I will see some of them later today.

Your task is to design a pot depicting a famous Greek myth.

You will need to do some research to choose your myth as well as the design of the actual pot. 

Try to use only orange and black in your drawing.

English- Read this extract carefully and then answer the questions as fully as you can, using evidence from the text to support your ideas. 

I will post possible answers later on today. 

The boat lurched right and then left as it rode the roller-coaster waves deep into the dark, stormy night. Each time it lent dangerously to the side, Stan feared that it would just keep on going and submerge them all in the cruel, raging sea. Miraculously, the boat kept righting itself again, only to tip dangerously over to the other side. Stan didn’t know how much more of this he could take. They had been riding this storm for the last 2 hours but it had felt like an eternity. Thankfully, the sickness had now passed, largely due to the fact that he had nothing left in his stomach to throw up. He was bruised and battered from being flung around the cabin like a ragdoll. Luckily, the table and chairs were bolted down, giving him something solid to hold on to. Anything that hadn’t been secured to the floor, was now scattered all over the room. He dared not poke his head into the galley kitchen. The noises he had heard from there suggested that the contents of the cupboards were now sliding up and down the floor.

Suddenly, the cabin door burst open and a large, weather-beaten man stumbled into the room. “You ok Stanny boy? You holding out alright?” shouted the man above the noise of the storm. “I think so Captain. When’s this storm going to quit?” Stan shouted back. “Soon Stan, soon,” the Captain replied. He gave Stan a reassuring smile and ruffled his hair with a large rough hand. “We’ll be sailing past the island soon so that’ll help protect us a little. The lads are getting tired, so when the sea starts to behave herself, they’d really appreciated some supper. Only when it’s safe to do so mind. I don’t want you hurting yourself. This will pass soon, I promise. We need to get those nets out. The only fish we’re catching at the moment are the ones getting washed up onto the boat by the storm!” He winked at Stan then lurched towards the direction of the door. He stepped fearlessly back out onto the deck as the wind slammed the door behind him.
