# 1HL

Welcome to 1HL!

## Maths: Solving grouping and sharing problems

We had to solve a different problem at each table. We could use jottings or pictures to help us solve it.  For example: There were 16 wheels - how many bicycles?

## History: Toys in the Past

We were very excited to have our own History Museum set up in school! Some of the toys were too old and delicate to play with, but there were plenty that we were allowed to touch.

What toys can you see?

What are old toys made out of?

Does anyone in your family have an old toy?

How are the old toys different to new toys?

Why were none of the old toys made out of plastic?

## Science: parts of a plant

We learnt about the parts of a flower by carefully taking apart a tulip and labelling each part.  (We know this was a special treat and is not something that you usually do to flowers!). We learnt some special new scientific words such as filament and stigma.

## D.T. (Design & Technology)

1HL have been working so hard on creating 'fantasy homes'.

First we had to look at pictures of fantasy homes in D.T. and Literacy, and we talked about who might live there (like a fairy or a wizard), and what the homes were like (gloomy, pretty, tall, tiny).

Next, the children designed a fantasy home then began to make it.

We have been busy ever since, trying to make the perfect home for a fantasy character.

Lastly, we will evaluate out work, so we can think about how we could make it even better if we were to make one again.

## Big Write

The children have been working really hard on their weekly 'Big Write.' There are candles on the tables and calm, classical music playing as they write.

We are starting to practise checking our Big Write work afterwards and trying to correct any mistakes we have made. It's tricky but we are getting there!

## Maths

When we learnt about shapes in maths, we created models with 3D shapes.  We had to use what we know about the shapes to make the model work: Cubes and cuboids have lots of flat faces so they are good for building. But some shapes like spheres rolled away! Can you explain why?

## Art

In Art we have been making lots of sculptures. Can you tell which ones are made of man-made materials and which ones are made of natural materials?

## D.T. - September 2018

In D.T. we practised using a knife safely by cutting up playdough.  We used our playdough skills from the previous lesson to roll a ball and a sausage shape, then cut it up into pieces. It was quite easy and we are looking forward to cutting real fruit soon!
